Curated by Thomas Golda, Kathrin Golda-Pongratz and Valentina Asinari di San Marzano, the exhibition presents a dialogue between Peruvian artist Alberto Quintanilla and Senegalese artist Ousseynou Gassama. Despite their different backgrounds and artistic trajectories, both artists are brought together by the transformative power of their inner worlds and their constant drive to give them tangible form. Their roots, physical displacement and migration form the magical thread that connects their work.
Alberto Quintanilla (Cusco, 1932)
He is a Peruvian artist whose work combines the playful perspective of childhood with the dramatic and festive intensity of adulthood. His paintings draw on Andean myths, satire, magic and a bestiary of his own creation, giving rise to an original universe comparable to those of Chagall, Miró and Van Gogh. Picasso described him as “the first Peruvian contribution to universal painting”.
He trained at the School of Fine Arts in Lima and in Paris, where he studied printmaking and restoration at the Louvre. He has exhibited in cities such as Paris, Geneva, Madrid, Berlin and Mexico City. His work is held in the collections of prestigious museums around the world, including MoMA and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
He has received numerous awards and honours, including the Gold Medal at the Florence Biennale (1972) and in Berlin (1987), as well as distinctions from the Congress of Peru and the Municipality of Cusco.
Ousseynou Gassama
Born in Senegal, he was seen in Barcelona around 2010, using discarded wine boxes as supports for his artworks. His whereabouts have been unknown since 2012.
His brief artistic output features geometric furniture and houses, drawn in graphite and coloured pencils on wood, in a style close to architectural drawing and imbued with mystery. He signed his works with copper inlays and worked with great care and precision. His pieces are held in private collections belonging to those who had the opportunity to meet him.
